Blasphemy is insulting or speaking offensively about God or sacred things, or saying something that is different form church doctrine. Saying "God is an idiot" is blasphemy. Profanity is set words or phrases that use religious themes. Curse words using religious terminology. Many people use the words profanity and obscenity to mean the same, but they are not. Profanity has to do with religion; obscenity does not.
